When I read through the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1, I’m struck by how dysfunctional, sad, shocking, or unremarkable many of His fathers were. They included evil kings, sex addicts, abusers, prostitute-doers, deceivers, manipulators, and a whole slew of obscure people.
And yet, “[they] were the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.”
No matter how dysfunctional, sad, shocking, or unremarkable our stories are, we still are part of God’s plan.
Lord, may we believe we are your chosen instruments for transforming the lives of people around us. May we believe you can use us…even us…no matter how messed up or invisible we may think we are. We praise you that your plans and purposes are bigger than anything we could do to derail them.
