In Luke 11, Jesus addresses the issue of praying to/revering Mary. “Blessed is the woman who bore you!” a person from the crowd cries out. This statement comes in a chapter in which Jesus teaches us how to pray. And it illustrates how people’s inclination to pray to Mary has existed from the beginning.
But Jesus responds without skipping a beat. Mary isn’t the blessed one, He says. It’s the people who hear the word of God and observe it. Those people are called “disciples.” (Jesus’ declaration at the end of his time on earth was to go make disciples…teaching them to observe all that He commanded us). So Mary isn’t the blessed one; it’s all the disciples made through time.
Jesus answers the question for us: Don’t pray to Mary. Instead, hear the word and observe it.
