With respect to raising kids in the ways of the Lord, it’s important to first ask what you’re hoping to do. For example, my underlying principle is that I want my kids to have their own relationship with Jesus. So that means I’m focused on facilitating that relationship, not imposing it on them, requiring them to believe in Jesus, or having them copy or vicariously adopt my faith.
I want them to understand truths about God and how to apply them to their current world. I want them to understand His character and attributes. I want them to talk to Him and hear what He says to them. I want them to recognize His working in their lives and be so confident of it that they are bold enough to tell others. I can’t make any of this happen, but I can model it for them and I can create an environment that facilitates it.
