Button and Niki were talking about math in the car on the way to school this morning.

“Daddy, Mommy was really good at math when she was a kid, right?”

“Yes, she was! And you are, too, Button.”

“Daddy, I want to try college math.”

“Oh, Button. You’re not ready for that yet.”

“But I want to try, Daddy. Give me a college math problem.”

So Niki decided to give her a pre-algebra problem. “Okay, Button. What’s 2 + x = 3?”

“x??”

“Yes, x.”

“Daddy, what does x mean?”

“See, Button, it’s too much for you.”

They finished the drive in silence. As Button got out of the car, she said, “Dad, is that 2 + 1 = 3? x = 1, right?”

He was amazed. “Yes, Button, that’s right! X = 1!”

“I figured it out myself!” she replied, and then skipped off to her first grade class.
