Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Cor. 15:58
What an encouraging verse! It reminds me of when I ran the Boston marathon and my friend Daryl ran back and forth from the hydration stands to bring me water and gatorade so I could simply keep going. That’s what this verse is like — the verse that keeps you going!
The work of the Lord is hard — so much so that it was worth addressing this this verse. Don’t be surprised by your strong desire to pull back or give up in doing ministry, or by fighting the belief that what you’re doing is pointless–that you’re spending your strength for nothing and for vanity, as Isaiah wrote. Or that it doesn’t matter if you do something — you don’t add much anyway. I feel well acquainted with these feelings — lies! — especially the last one.
But this verse has been a great encouragement to me, and it has strengthened my shield of faith as I have meditated on it during periods of doubt and fatigue.
