You know that movie Julie & Julia? The one where the modern day woman follows in the steps of Julia Childs by cooking through her cookbook?

Well, I think if my life were a movie right now, it would be called Martha ‘n Me. And it would show how despite my greatest efforts, I follow in the footsteps of Martha in the Bible – the one who was busy, busy, busy prepping dinner for Jesus while her less-than-helpful sister sat at His feet being taught with the men-folk.

Recently, God asked me this: “Kelly, love, do you know why you’re so busy?”

I didn’t bother posing a response. In my experience, when God asks a question, it’s not because He needs an answer…

“It’s because your worried.”

The story of Martha and Mary popped into my mind, along with Jesus’ words to Martha: “Martha, Martha, you’re worried about so many things.” God then showed me that I busy myself to take care of things I’m worried about. And I also busy myself so I can be distracted by things I’m worried about but unable to do anything about. So, my busyness is a way to control and a way to hide.

“Do you know why you worry?” He asked.

Again, I didn’t answer.

And He brought to mind the verse in Philippians: “Don’t worry about anything, instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for what He has done. Then the peace that passes understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”

He showed me that if I pray about the things I’m worrying about – as they pop into my head – then I won’t be as consumed with busyness.
