For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God — not the result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Gifts of God, salvation and otherwise, cannot be earned by our own doing. Or lost for what we fail to do. So when we mess up, when we fall short, when we don’t measure up, when we fail, God’s grace covers us. We only need to believe that Jesus’s sacrifice covers us – that God’s love for us is truly unfailing.

I spend a lot of time beating myself up – or letting the enemy beat me up with his lies – for all the ways I fall short. You know – I’m too assertive, too intimidating, not joyful enough, not gentle enough, not patient enough, not good enough, not accomplishing enough… If I only do more, change my personality, get up earlier and go to bed later so I can fit everything in, then…

Then what?

I am not going to earn God’s love or grace by what I accomplish or lose His love or grace by what I don’t. His love and grace for me are not my own doing.
