Button was asking me about marriage – who she was going to marry. This was prompted in part from a discussion about the Disney princesses and the princes they married.

“Who am I going to marry, Mama?”

“I don’t know, Button.”

“Well, what’s his name, Mama?”

“I don’t know his name, Button. But I’ll tell you what I do know. He will be very nice, and he will take good care of you. He will love Jesus very much. He will love you very much, and you will have fun together. And he will love me, and Daddy, and Siah, too. And we will love him. He will become part of our family.”

Her eyes lit up. “Who is he, Mama???”

“I don’t know, Button. You get to pick who you’re going to marry.”

She smiled full-dimpled and exclaimed, “I’m going to marry PAPA!!!”

[At this point I took the opportunity to explain the critical caveat that she can’t marry someone who already is married. Once someone chooses to marry someone else, they’re unavailable. This is an important lesson for women to learn – and the earlier this can get instilled, the better!]
