This song seems to be about heaven – that at the end of our life, there’s rest for the weary, laughter, love for the lonely, and time to walk in the sun. You know – the concept of “Rest in peace.”

While this is true, it struck me that the Sabbath is God’s gift of a little bit of heaven now. He’s given us an extra day in the week to experience the rest we will enjoy for eternity.

In the song, Cohn talks about how his dad rested only one day per year. And the result of that was that his whole family was worn out and that his mom was hurting. We also will be lonely, hurting, divided, and worn out (not just us, but our loved ones around us, too) if we don’t take the rest we are designed to take.

Niki mentioned something to me recently that made me realize that I sometimes affect our family the same way Cohn’s dad did – I get so burnt out and stressed out by all the things I have to do that I get into bad moods and carry that attitude over to him and the kids. He gets the brunt of it, but basically my failure to manage my commitments and take my necessary rest pulls down all of them. Ouch. I don’t want to be that way.

Instead, I want to enjoy a little bit of heaven now. I want to rest. I want to walk in the “sun” (or Son, in my case). I don’t want to fatigue, divide, or hurt my loved ones.

“One day, there’s rest for the weary…” Yes. What day will that be this week?

Rest for the Weary

My father was a working man
But his work was never done
He stood behind a counter
And he smiled at everyone
He bought himself a business
Worked seven days a week
Took a holiday for Christmas
Then he fell asleep beside the tree
But one day
One day

There’s love for the lonely
One day
They walk in the sun
One day
Rest for the weary
Rest for the weary ones
Now my mother stood beside him

She did what she could do
But if you look at some old photograph
She looks tired too
I hope there was some laughter
‘Cause I know there were some tears
Now all I can say is I pray to God
That after all those years
After all those years
That one day
One day

There’s love for the lonely
One day
They walk in the sun
One day
Rest for the weary
Rest for the weary ones
Now I’m just another traveller

On another winding road
I’m trying to walk some kind of line
I’m trying to pull some kind of load
Now sometimes I move real easy
Sometimes I can’t catch my breath
Sometimes I see my father’s footsteps
And man it scares me half to death
But one day
One day

There’s love for the lonely
One day
We walk in the sun
One day
Rest for the weary
Rest for the weary ones
