In the beginning, God created earth and man & woman. And He gave His authority over earth to man & woman because He loved them. But they allowed themselves to be deceived by Satan and therefore ceded their authority to him.

At the start of the Gospels, it is clear that Satan has authority over the world. In tempting Jesus, Satan showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and said, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.” (Luke 4:6).

Jesus resists Satan, though, and begins His 3 years of ministry, in which He uses the authority of God given to Him to really shake things up. He even gave that authority to his 12 disciples and sent them out to do miracles. When they returned astounded by what they experienced, Jesus replied: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” (Luke 10″18-19)

So Jesus restored the authority of God to His followers — the same authority that God’s creation had abdicated in Eden.

After Jesus was resurrected, He gave His followers this commission: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Matt 28:18

So after the resurrection, all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to Jesus. Jesus had to die to restore that authority to us. Which means Satan has no authority over us.

But whenever we believe the lies or succumb to the temptations of Satan, we turn over our authority to Satan. Like Adam & Eve, we get to choose whether to live and operate under the authority of God given to us, or to exchange our authority for something Satan offers.

Last week Niki preached on the lies of Satan and combating them. I heard it and took it to heart, but did not understand the far deeper spiritual implications of believing Satan’s lies until I understood about the authority given to me by Jesus. When I believe Satan’s lies, I not only paralyze and destroy myself, but I also cheapen the grace Jesus showed me by forfeiting His authority back to Satan.
